Scrappy Simple Speaker

We need a music when we are working aka sewing, don't we?. I asked my daughter to upload some songs from her files to my iPhone, she has nice songs collection.

My iPhone always follow me wherever I go (LOL).. I do have a real speaker and an earphone but today I don't want to use both of them. I made this simple speaker just for fun. Sometime my eyes are getting so tired to sew, so I try to do something else.

You need: Paper towel roll, paper glue, some small scraps and cutter.

Cut a hole that fit for iPhone or other phones. 

The phone side with a speaker should get into the roll.

Cover the roll with scraps, no need to glue it neatly. 

The glue won't show up when it dry.

Mix glue with a little bit of water then apply them all over the scrappy roll. 

Let it dry out completely.

Enjoy your music! 

X-mas Ornament : Christmas Tree

I couldn't send a cake or cookies to you this year, so I've made these videos just for you ;) ..

X-mas Ornament : Angels.

You know what's a great gift you can give for your friends or family? I think something that you make by yourself will be a great gift .. 2 months until Christmas.. Still have a lot of time!

I don't celebrate Christmas but I just love to share an idea for those who celebrate it, especially for my quilting friends.. (I forgot where I've seen this angel ornament, but I do remember how it looks).

You need:

2 Different of fabrics 15cm x 15cm (robes).

2 Felt 12cm x 14 cm (wings).

1 Broken white fabric 8cm x 8cm (head).

1 Felt 4cm x 4cm (head).

1 cardboard 3,5cm diameter.

Gold ribbon & gold thread.

Have you seen "You've Got Mail"? I watched that movie more then a hundred times (LOL).
This morning, I used my favorite movie CD as a template then I turn it on in the CD player and I watched Tom Hank and Meg Ryan again and continued my crafting.

To make a circle for the angle's robes, find tutorial here.

Fold collar for the robes and stitch together in the middle. Sew 2 heart shape of felt with running stitch to make angel's wings. For the head make yo-yo and fill it with felt and cardboard.

Put ribbon on the head, draw eyes (used waterproof pen) and give a little face powder on the cheek.
Put the robes on the wing and the head on upper of the collar. You can sew or use glue to put them together.

Sew a long thread on the top of the head to hang these cute angels on your christmas tree.

"Focus and Smart".. done before NYE!

Today I finished this "clean look" quilt, before New Year Eve.. I'll be going to a party tonight!. 

My son said:"Finally mom you finished it!"..It took so long to finish this project, too busy doing some other things made this project untouched. This is going to be his quilt, I give it a tittle "FOCUS and SMART". I mix and match two blocks, 12 Ohio Star blocks and 6 Log Cabin blocks. My son is a smart young man (He's 18 last week) and he needs to focus on his dream...I wish him all the best.

Ohio Star means Smart.

Log Cabin block means Focus.

Simple Tutorial.

Cut:

Red  3 1/2" square (1x)

White 2"x 3 1/2" (2x)

White 2" x 6 1/2" (2x)

Blue   2" x 6 1/2" (2x)

Blue   2" x 9 1/2" (2x)

White 2" x 9 1/2" (2x)

White 2" x 12 1/2" (2x)

Sew white strips to red, left and right side.

Sew white strips on upper and below.

Next, sew blue strips with the same steps.

And last the white strips again.

Tutorial: Less Then Traditional Technique

Less Then Traditional Technique used 2 pattern: circle and square. And we need 2 different fabrics, or you can use more if you like.

I made 6 1/2" circle template and 4 1/2" square template.

Using the circle template, mark the circle on the wrong side of the fabric. 

Place 2 fabric right side together, then sew on the line.

Cut the circle with 1/4" seam allowance.

Mark 11/2" line on the fabric that will be for the top.

Place the square template for your guide when you mark the 11/2" line. 

Cut the line using the sharp scissor. (Only on one side of the fabric!!!)

Then cut all around the seam allowance about 1/2" distance.

Turn all the circle through the hole.

Press them.

Draw the line using the square template on the top side. (Draw only on the side that we will join/sew them)

And place the hole on side that's going to be in the hidden curve.

Pin really well at the same point of your two circles.
Then sew on the line, sew only one curve first.

After flatted the curve on the first row, you can go to the next row.
Sew together first row and second row.
Applique the curves, with hand sewing or machine.

Notes: 
If you notice on the picture above, for the top I used two fabric: red with small motif and red poinsettia flower motif. I will tell you later why I made the circles with two differrent red, wait until this project done ;) 

On the picture below I fussy cut the poinsettia flower, isn't nice?

Tutorial: Silent Star Block

A little bit unwell makes me late to post "Silent Star" tutorial, but I'm OK now :).

 HALF SQUARE TRIANGLE BLOCK

Steps:

1. Cut 2 light blue 5"x 5" squares, and 2 white 5"x 5". Draw a diagonal line on wrong side of white.
2. Place white square on light blue, right sides together.
    Sew 1/4" seam on each side of marked line. Cut apart on marked line.
3. Open and press. Measure square 4 1/2" x 4 1/2", and trim off the excess.
4. Four pieces half square triangle blocks... or you can make pinwheel block :).

HOURGLASS BLOCK

Steps:

1. Cut red 5 1/2 "x 5 1/2" squares, and white 5 1/2"x 5 1/2". 

    Draw a diagonal line on wrong side of white . 

2. Place white square on red, right sides together. 

    Sew 1/4" seam on each side of marked line. 

3. Cut apart on marked line.

4. Open and press to make 2 pieced half square triangle blocks.

5.  Place half square triangle on other square with opposite position red on white and white on red.
     And right sides together.
6.  Draw a diagonal line on wrong side. Sew 1/4" seam on each side of marked line.

7. Cut apart on marked line.

8. Open and press to make 2 pieced hourglass blocks.

 9.  Twist the center on back side.

10. Hourglass Square

11. Measure square 4 1/2" x 4 1/2", and trim off the excess.

12. ( IF )To make 12"x 12" block need 9 pieced hourglass blocks.. I think for next project I will make a baby quilt from this block :))

HOURGLASS (VARIATION) BLOCK

Steps:

1. Cut light blue 5 1/2 "x 5 1/2" squares, white 5 1/2"x 5 1/2", and 2 dark blue 5 1/2"x 5 1/2".

    Draw a diagonal line on wrong side of lighter fabrics . 

2. Place white square on dark blue, right sides together. And light blue on dark blue.

    Sew 1/4" seam on each side of marked line. Cut apart on marked line.

SORRY, I FORGOT TO TAKE A PICTURE FOR NEXT STEP. PLEASE SEE RED AND WHITE HOURGLASS ABOVE!

Open and press to make half square triangle blocks : 2 pieced white and dark blue, and 2 pieced light blue and dark blue.

Place cross, white dark blue square to light blue dark blue square with right sides together. 

Draw a diagonal line on wrong side. Sew 1/4" seam on each side of marked line. Cut apart on marked line.

3. Open and press, measure square 4 1/2" x 4 1/2", and trim off the excess.

4. Make 4 pieced hourglass blocks.

Join the pieced squares into rows, press the seams on each row in opposite direction.

Join rows into a block, making sure seams match from one row to the next. Pressing the seam in opposite directions helps them to lie flat.
